The Studio is the Academy's working room — where the tone you hear in your head meets the microphone, the amp, the cable, the speaker, the room. One place for the tuner, the dB meter, the fingerings chart, and the canonical reference for everything a gigging musician needs to know about amplification and recording. Acoustics owns the physics; Instruments owns the hardware that makes the sound; the Studio owns what happens to that sound on the way to the listener.

What this page is for. The beginner gets the tuner and dB-meter basics. The pro gets the recording and amplification overview. The tuner — what it does, and what it doesn't

The tuner above is a tool. The ear is the truth. The two live together.

A = 440 Hz

The reference

A above middle C vibrates at 440 cycles per second. That's the 20th-century orchestra standard and the tuner's default. Most pianos in the world are tuned to it.

Why a musician cares: A = 440 is the lingua franca. If you don't agree on it before the downbeat, every other tuning decision is downstream of that argument.

A = 442 Hz

The European drift

Many European orchestras tune to A = 442 (or even 443) — the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic. The reasoning: slightly sharper sounds slightly brighter, projects further in a hall. A 2 Hz difference is small but audible; a string section will hear it instantly against an A = 440 piano.

The Israeli reality: conservatory pianos vary. Ask before you tune.

A = 415 Hz

Baroque pitch

Period-instrument ensembles play Bach, Handel, Vivaldi at A = 415 — roughly a semitone below modern pitch. Classical-era ensembles use A = 430. Pre-19th-century, "A" wasn't a fixed frequency — it varied by city, by church organ, by decade. The tuner's reference selector lets you set the anchor; the tuner only tells you "where you are relative to that anchor."

Expert tip — ear-first, tuner-second

Use the tuner to set the open strings or the A. Then put it away and tune the rest by ear — perfect fifths on violin/viola/cello, fourths on bass and guitar, octaves on piano. The reason: the tuner reads equal temperament, but the open intervals on a string instrument want to be pure. Tune every fifth to a beating-free pure 3:2 and you'll be slightly off the tuner — and slightly more in tune with reality. The tuner gives you the anchor. The ear locks the intervals.

Misconception

"The tuner is the truth"

It isn't. The tuner is a second opinion aimed at one specific question: "what frequency is this note?" It can't tell you whether the chord sounds in tune, whether your vibrato is centered, whether the section blends, or whether the piano you're sitting at is itself slightly flat. The ensemble is the truth. The tuner tells you where you are; the ensemble tells you where to be.

Misconception

"Cents are absolute units"

A cent is 1/100 of an equal-tempered semitone — so cents change with the reference. ±5 cents from A = 440 is in tune for a piano. ±5 cents on a string-quartet major 3rd is significantly sharp of pure (since equal-tempered 3rds are already 14 cents sharp of pure). Read cents against the context you're playing in. See Acoustics for the temperament math underneath.

The dB meter — what loudness means

The meter above is a relative gauge. The numbers and the hearing-loss math behind them are absolute.

Decibels aren't linear

+10 dB SPL means ten times the sound power. +20 dB means a hundred times. The ear perceives a 10 dB increase as roughly "twice as loud." So 95 dB isn't "a bit louder than 85" — it's ten times the energy reaching the eardrum and perceived as twice the volume. The Acoustics page works the physics; here it's about safety and judgment. Perceived ≠ measured

The ear is most sensitive around 2–5 kHz (consonants, cymbal sizzle, voice intelligibility) and less sensitive at the bass and high-treble extremes. So 80 dB at 3 kHz feels louder than 80 dB at 50 Hz. This is why mix engineers boost the bass slightly on quiet playback — and why a bass amp can be physically dangerous at a level that "feels" only moderately loud.

OSHA 1910.95

The 85 dB / 8-hour line

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration's noise standard (29 CFR 1910.95) sets the hearing-conservation action level at 85 dBA averaged over an 8-hour day, and the permissible exposure limit (PEL) at 90 dBA. Above 85, full hearing-protection programs are required. The exchange rate is 5 dB: every 5 dB louder cuts the safe exposure time in half. So 95 dB is safe for ~2 hours; 100 dB for ~1 hour; 105 dB for ~30 minutes. NIOSH (the more conservative public-health standard) uses 85 dB / 8 hours with a 3 dB exchange rate — every 3 dB doubles the damage rate. Earplugs are not a sign of weakness; they're how careers last decades.

What a gig actually measures

Acoustic chamber music: ~70 dB. Quiet jazz duo in a small room: ~75 dB. A working jazz club with a quartet: ~85–95 dB. A loud big-band shout chorus: ~100–105 dB. A rock club: ~105–115 dB. The drummer's seat in any of the above is 5–10 dB louder than the audience. If a gig regularly reads 95+ dB on a meter, hearing protection is the policy, not the exception.

SPL vs LUFS

Two different "loudness"

SPL (sound pressure level) measures the room. LUFS (loudness units full scale) measures a recording's perceived loudness, integrated over time, used by Spotify / Apple Music / YouTube to normalize playback (typically −14 LUFS). The meter on this page is an SPL-style relative meter for the room. LUFS lives inside the DAW.

Expert tip — protect first, mix second

Musician's earplugs (Etymotic ER-20, ACS Pro, Westone) attenuate ~15–25 dB evenly across frequencies — not the muffled bass-heavy attenuation of foam plugs. You hear the music in proportion; you just hear it quieter. Get a pair fitted before a year of gigging adds permanent tinnitus to the bill. You can't unblow an ear.

Misconception

"Louder = better"

Above ~85 dB, the ear's frequency response starts compressing — the bass and treble flatten relative to the mids. Loud doesn't actually mean clearer; it means more bandwidth has been squeezed into the most-sensitive midrange. Clarity comes from balance and EQ, not from level. The mark of a working sound engineer is the gig that sounds huge at 92 dB and the gig that sounds embarrassing at 105.

Misconception

"The dB meter on my phone is accurate"

It isn't, and the meter on this page isn't either. Phone mics under-read by 5–15 dB compared to a calibrated SPL meter, and they vary by phone model. Read the meter as relative — is the room getting louder or quieter? Compare two situations on the same device. For OSHA-grade compliance you need a Type 2 SPL meter (Reed, Extech, B&K).

Microphones — the four families

Every working musician should know what these four kinds of mic do, why they exist, and which one to ask the engineer for.

dynamic

Dynamic — the workhorse

A small diaphragm attached to a coil suspended in a magnetic field. The diaphragm moves with the sound, the coil moves through the field, voltage is generated. Tough, no external power needed, handles high SPL without distorting. The Shure SM58 (vocal, 1966) and SM57 (instrument, 1965) are the world's two most-deployed microphones — vocal mic on every gig, snare-and-guitar-amp mic on every recording session. Cheap, indestructible, sound great on the right source.

Use them for: live vocals, kick/snare/toms, guitar amps, brass at close range.

condenser

Condenser — the studio detail

A thin, charged diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor; sound moves the plate, capacitance changes, voltage tracks the change. Needs +48V phantom power. More sensitive, more detail, more high-frequency response than a dynamic — and more fragile, more prone to feedback live. Neumann U47 (1949, large-diaphragm, Sinatra's mic), U87 (1967, the studio default for half a century), KM84 (small-diaphragm pencil, 1966 — instrument detail). Audio-Technica AT2020 ($100) gets you 80% of the way for home recording.

Use them for: studio vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, drum overheads, acoustic strings.

ribbon

Ribbon — warmth in a pickup

A thin corrugated aluminum ribbon suspended between magnets. The ribbon moves with the air; tiny voltage is induced. Famously warm and natural, a rolled-off top end that flatters edgy sources. Royer R-121 (1998 — the modern ribbon revival), RCA 44 / 77 (1930s–50s — the broadcast classic still in studios). Often the answer for brass when condensers sound too brittle.

Use them for: brass, electric-guitar amps, drum overheads in jazz, "old-school" vocal sound.

The "pencil" — detail in a small body

Small-diaphragm condensers — pencil mics — like the Neumann KM84 / KM184, AKG C451, Audio-Technica AT2021. Faster transient response than large-diaphragm, more accurate at high frequencies. The classic choice for drum overheads, acoustic guitar, piano, hi-hat, cymbals. A stereo pair of pencils above a piano is half the working-pianist's recording vocabulary.

pattern

Polar patterns — what the mic hears

Cardioid (heart-shape): picks up the front, rejects the back. The default. Omni: equal pickup from all directions — natural, room-aware, no proximity effect. Figure-8 (bidirectional): front and back, sides rejected — the classic ribbon pattern, used for Blumlein and M/S stereo. Many condensers (U87, AKG C414) switch between patterns. The pattern is half the recording decision; the mic itself is the other half.

distance

The four placement zones

Close (1–6 inches): maximum source, minimum room — kick inside, vocal on mic, guitar-amp grille. Near (6–24 inches): natural balance, some room — acoustic guitar at the 12th fret, vocal at studio distance. Far (2–6 feet): the instrument plus its body, the room contributes — piano at stage front, drum-kit room mic. Ambient (across the room): the room is the sound — orchestral, jazz-trio "natural" recording, gospel choir overheads. Most working recordings combine two distances.

Expert tip — the 3:1 rule

When using two mics on different sources at the same time (a vocalist and a guitar; two singers side by side), keep the distance between the mics at least three times the distance from each mic to its own source. So if the vocal mic is 6 inches from the singer's mouth, the guitar mic should be at least 18 inches away. This minimizes phase cancellation between the bleed. A standard textbook lesson; ignored at every poorly-recorded podcast.

Misconception

"Better mic = better recording"

The mic is the second variable. The first is what's in front of it — the player, the instrument, the room. A $100 AT2020 on a tuned piano in a treated room beats a $4000 U87 on a clanking upright in a kitchen. Position before equipment. The Coltrane principle: a single confident take through a working mic is worth ten anxious takes through a great one.

Recording — the home rig

The minimum effective home recording setup, and the principles you only learn by doing.

the rig

Laptop + interface + mic + headphones + quiet room

The minimum effective recording rig hasn't changed in 15 years. Laptop (any modern Mac or PC). USB audio interface with two mic preamps and phantom power (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is the universal beginner choice, ~$200). A condenser mic (Audio-Technica AT2020, ~$100; Rode NT1; or step up to a Neumann TLM 102). Closed-back headphones for tracking (Sony MDR-7506, the broadcast standard since 1991). A quiet room. That's the whole list. Everything else is luxury.

DAW

Which DAW

GarageBand (free, Mac, fine for first months). Logic Pro (one-time $200, Mac, the standard of working composers and producers). Ableton Live (Mac/PC, electronic + live performance). Pro Tools (industry-standard studio, subscription model). Reaper (cheap, deeply customizable, cross-platform). The DAW is a workflow, not a sound. All of them record audio at the same quality. Choose by the workflow that lets you keep going when inspiration hits.

format

Sample rate and bit depth

Record at 24-bit, 48 kHz for most projects. 24-bit gives you ~144 dB of dynamic range — far more headroom than 16-bit's 96 dB, which is what CDs and MP3s ultimately deliver. 48 kHz is the video / broadcast standard; 44.1 kHz is the CD/streaming standard. Either works; pick the project's downstream target and stay consistent. Higher rates (96 kHz, 192 kHz) cost CPU and storage with little audible payoff for normal music projects.

gain staging

The first thing that goes wrong

Gain staging is the discipline of setting levels at each stage of the signal chain so nothing distorts and nothing is buried in noise. The mic preamp on the interface should peak around −12 to −6 dBFS on the loudest part. The DAW channel should not clip (no red lights). The master bus should peak around −6 dBFS. If your recording sounds distorted, gain staging is the first place to look — almost always before the mic is the problem.

monitoring

Headphone bleed and the click

When you record with headphones, the click track and the playback bleed back into the mic — quietly, but enough to be heard on a finished mix if the singer's headphones are loud. Use closed-back headphones for tracking (the Sony MDR-7506 stays the working standard exactly because of its tight isolation). Turn the click only loud enough to feel; turn the playback only loud enough to perform against. Open-back headphones (Sennheiser HD-600, HD-650) are mixing tools, not tracking tools.

Expert tip — the Coltrane single-take principle

Coltrane's A Love Supreme (December 9, 1964) was tracked mostly in single takes — the quartet playing through the material as a complete performance, not editing fragments together. The discipline that produced is what makes the record sound alive. Set up the room, get the levels right, then play the piece from top to tail as if it were the gig. Edit only if a single take won't yield the whole arc. You'll record fewer hours and finish more music. Performance is a verb, not an asset to be assembled.

Misconception

"Great gear makes a great recording"

Good gear is the threshold, not the goal. Above the minimum-effective rig, the next 90% of recording quality is room, mic position, performance, and arrangement — not more expensive equipment. The classic Blue Note records were tracked on a handful of Neumann mics through tube preamps to a tape machine in Rudy Van Gelder's living room. The room was the engineering. Position before equipment; performance before position.

Misconception

"I'll fix it in the mix"

The mix can adjust balance, color, and space. It cannot fix a take that wasn't there, a phrase that wasn't felt, an intonation that wasn't tracked, a room that wasn't right. Plug-ins are not time machines. Track it like you mean it the first time. The mix should add the last 10%, not save the first 90.

Amplification — keyboard, bass, vocal

The three amplification problems a working musician will face. Each has its own physics; each has its own canonical answers.

The keyboard amp problem

A stage piano outputs the entire range a piano outputs — five-plus octaves, full bass, bright top. A keyboard amp has to reproduce that without distorting the lows or shrieking on top. The Roland KC series (KC-80, KC-200, KC-400, KC-600) has been the working musician's keyboard amplifier for over two decades — full-range, two-way speakers, stereo input, mic input, low maintenance. For more demanding gigs, the Nord-into-Yamaha-HS8-monitor or Nord-into-small-PA approach gives a flatter, more studio-like response — closer to "your keyboard through a PA" than "your keyboard through a guitar amp."

band-size

What size for what gig

Trio in a small room: KC-200 or KC-400, or a single Yamaha HS8 monitor + sub if you want stereo. Quartet/quintet in a club: KC-600 or a pair of HS8s; ask for a DI line into the house if there's one. Big band or large stage: DI straight to the house, use a monitor for your own mix. Above all: ask the room what it has before bringing your own. Most venues have a working PA; bringing a backline amp to a venue with a great PA is bringing a hammer to a screwdriver job.

bass

Bass amplification — the low-end physics

Bass needs more power than mids for the same perceived loudness (the equal-loudness curves; see Acoustics). And low frequencies need real cabinet volume to reproduce — there's a minimum-size physics floor. The canonical brands: Ampeg (the SVT tube head with an 8×10 cabinet, introduced 1969 — the rock-jazz workhorse for half a century), Markbass (Italian, founded 2001 — light, clean, modern), Aguilar (New York, high-end heads and cabs). Small combo amps (Ampeg Rocket, Markbass Mini CMD) for jazz club; head + cab (Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 + DB 410) for louder rooms.

The room-fills-the-low-end rule

Bass frequencies have long wavelengths (50 Hz = ~22 feet). They build up in corners, between parallel walls, anywhere the room can resonate. The bass cab's job is not to fill the room with bass — it's to give the player a clear personal monitor while the room and the PA do the loud work. A 100W combo is plenty for most jazz gigs because the room and the PA carry the actual sound to the audience. Bringing a 600W rig because "bass needs power" is fighting physics that's on your side.

vocal/PA

Small PA — the 50-person room

For a small acoustic gig (duo, trio, light quartet in a 30–60-person room), a portable PA is enough — a pair of powered tops (Yamaha DBR12, QSC K10, JBL EON, Bose L1), a small mixer with 4–8 channels, vocal mics, monitors or floor wedges, cables. Stage volume management is the silent skill: keep amps low so the vocal mic isn't fighting the band; lift the band through the PA, not over it. The goal: the audience hears the vocal as the loudest element.

Monitor mixes — what you hear vs what they hear

On stage you hear loud personal sources (your own amp, the drum kit nearby) and quiet far sources (the singer 15 feet away). The monitor's job is to fill in what's missing — usually the vocal, often the click, sometimes the bass. What goes in the monitor is what you can't already hear. A bad monitor mix is a monitor blaring everything; a good one is the four things you need most, balanced. In-ear monitors are the modern fix: isolation plus a personal mix.

Expert tip — the volume war is won at sound check

The volume war on a small stage is the drums against everyone else. The fix isn't louder amps; it's a quieter kit. Brushes instead of sticks for the quiet tunes. Soft mallets on the bass drum. A low ride bell, not the loud one. If the drummer commits to a club-appropriate volume, every other amp can drop 6 dB and the band sounds bigger, not smaller. The cheap trick that saves the gig — and the audience's ears.

Misconception

"A guitar amp will work for keyboard"

Guitar amps are tuned for the midrange of a guitar (200 Hz – 4 kHz) and roll off the lows and highs by design — that's part of "guitar tone." Run a piano through one and you lose the bottom octave entirely and the bright attack of the top notes. Keyboard amps and PAs are full-range systems; guitar amps are voiced systems. Different jobs.

Speakers and monitors

What you trust your decisions to. Mixing on the wrong speaker is mixing in the dark.

studio monitors

Nearfield reference monitors

Speakers designed to be heard from a few feet away, in a small room, telling you the truth about the mix. Yamaha NS-10M (1978, discontinued 2001) — the white-cone monitor in every classic studio photograph. Famously unflattering; if it sounds good on NS-10s it sounds good everywhere. Genelec (Finnish, since 1978) — the calibrated active monitor, used by the BBC and most modern broadcast facilities. Adam Audio (German, since 1999) — the ribbon-tweeter monitor of the modern era. Yamaha HS8 (the spiritual NS-10 successor, $400) — the working musician's reference.

Closed-back for tracking, open-back for mixing

Closed-back: Sony MDR-7506 (1991, broadcast standard, tight isolation, edgy high end — perfect for tracking, less ideal for mixing). Audio-Technica ATH-M50x (modern alternative). Open-back: Sennheiser HD-600 / HD-650 (1997 / 2003 — the mixing-engineer's reference, natural soundstage, no isolation). Beyerdynamic DT 990. Use closed-back when a mic is open; use open-back when you're deciding what the mix sounds like.

live monitors

Stage monitors and in-ears

The wedge floor monitor angles up at the player's face; the in-ear monitor sits inside the player's ear. Wedge: easy to set up, harder to control, leaks into vocal mics. In-ear: complete isolation, personal mix, requires either a wireless pack and a transmitter or a wired feed from the board. For working musicians playing 100+ gigs a year, in-ears are how you keep your hearing.

Expert tip — translate, don't trust

No monitor is the truth. Every one colors the sound — bass-light, mid-forward, treble-bright. The discipline: learn what YOUR monitors sound like, and translate. Mix on the speakers you have, then check the mix on at least three other systems: a phone speaker, a car stereo, a pair of earbuds. If the mix holds up across all four, it'll hold up on most listening systems. The mix that only sounds good on the studio monitors is a mix that only sounds good in the studio.

Cables and connections — the boring stuff that ruins a gig

The unglamorous reality. Half of all "broken equipment" complaints are cable problems.

XLR

The pro audio connector

Three-pin round connector. Carries a balanced signal — the same audio is sent on two wires, one inverted; at the receiving end the difference is what gets used, so any noise picked up along the cable (which appears equally on both wires) cancels out. Standard for microphones, between mixers, into powered speakers. Quiet at long distances. The pro audio default for a reason.

TRS

1/4-inch tip-ring-sleeve

Looks identical to a guitar cable but has three conductors (tip, ring, sleeve) instead of two. Carries balanced audio (like XLR), or stereo (left + right + ground, for headphones). Studio interface outputs, between rack gear, headphones. If the cable says "balanced" and the connector is 1/4-inch with two rings, it's TRS.

TS

1/4-inch tip-sleeve (instrument cable)

The standard guitar/bass cable. Unbalanced — only two conductors (signal and ground). Picks up noise on long runs. Fine for under 20 feet from instrument to amp; problematic for longer runs. Never use a TS cable where a TRS is needed — you lose the balanced advantage and may short the ring to ground.

DI box

The unbalanced-to-balanced converter

A direct-injection (DI) box takes an instrument-level unbalanced signal (TS) and outputs a mic-level balanced signal (XLR). Use it for bass, keyboards, and acoustic guitars feeding into a PA. The DI box also provides ground lift to fight 60-Hz hum from incompatible grounds. A passive DI (Radial JDI, Whirlwind IMP2) for most jobs; an active DI (Countryman Type 85) when the source is weak.

Expert tip — coil the cable, save the cable

Cables die from being yanked, stepped on, and especially from being coiled wrong. Coil with the "over-under" technique: one loop natural, the next loop reversed (the cable goes "over" then "under" alternately). This prevents the internal twist build-up that breaks the wire inside the jacket. A 30-second skill that doubles the life of every cable in your bag.

Misconception

"Expensive cables sound better"

For analog audio at instrument or line level, once a cable is well-shielded and well-built, the cable's contribution to "sound" is essentially zero. A $15 Mogami patch cable performs as well as a $150 boutique one. Spend the cable budget on quantity and reliability, not exoticism. Two spare cables in the bag beat one expensive one in the bag.

Piano amplification — the percussion-with-strings problem

The piano is a box with strings inside that get hit by hammers. That makes it the hardest acoustic instrument to amplify cleanly.

Why piano is hard to mic live

The piano radiates sound from the whole soundboard — a 5-by-5-foot surface — and the strings are buried inside a heavy lid. Any single close mic captures only one part of the picture and bleeds the entire stage into the recording. Any far mic gets the full sound and the feedback that comes with it. This is why live jazz piano is the hardest amplification problem in the room. The room is doing half the work; the engineer is finishing it.

Helpinstill

The Helpinstill pickup

An electromagnetic pickup that clips onto a grand piano's iron frame and senses the string motion directly — like a guitar pickup, scaled up. No mic in front, no feedback, no stage bleed. Introduced in 1972 (Elton John was the first customer); still made today, still used by touring pianists who need a clean signal at high stage volume. The trade-off: it doesn't capture the soundboard, only the strings — so the tone is bright and direct, less of the "piano in a hall" sound.

AKG C414

Inside-the-piano condenser

For studio recording, a pair of condensers inside the open lid is the canonical approach. The AKG C414 (large-diaphragm, switchable patterns) and Neumann KM84/KM184 (pencil pair) are the workhorses. Standard placement: one mic over the bass strings (around the C3 hammer), one over the treble (around the C5 hammer), both 6–10 inches above the strings. Combined with the Helpinstill for live work, you get the bright direct signal plus the rich soundboard signal.

DI options for a stage piano

A Nord, a Yamaha CP, a Roland RD — modern stage pianos have stereo 1/4-inch outputs that already produce a clean, balanced-friendly signal. Run a TRS-to-XLR cable (or pass through a stereo DI) straight to the house. Use the house PA as the amplification; use a small monitor (Yamaha HS8, Roland KC-200) for your own ears. This is the cleanest, lightest, lowest-maintenance approach for any club gig.

The home practice studio

The minimum that lets a student practice deeply, record themselves, and not annoy the neighbors.

The minimum kit

One instrument you can play every day. A quiet room with a door that closes. A pair of closed-back headphones for late-night practice (Sony MDR-7506, the standard). A phone with a voice-recorder app. That's enough to make extraordinary progress for two years. Everything else is amplification of that core.

The honest add-ons

A real metronome (or the Academy metronome). A music stand. A tuner (or the Academy tuner above). Sheet music in a binder, or PDFs on an iPad. A camera or laptop webcam for posture review. Each addition earns its place by making the daily practice better, not by signaling a serious-musician aesthetic.

The recording rig

The minimum effective rig above — interface + condenser + closed-backs + DAW. Adds the ability to track lessons, post performances, send demos, hear yourself the way listeners hear you. Recording yourself is the single highest-leverage practice move there is. Add it early. The phone recorder works for years before you need the interface.

The room treatment

You're not building a studio. You're killing the worst echoes. A rug on the floor, curtains on the window, a bookshelf or absorption panel on the wall behind the recording position. If a clap in the room produces an audible slap-back echo, that echo is in every recording you make. Soft surfaces are cheaper and more effective than gear; treat the room before you upgrade the mic.

Common misconceptions — collected

"Good gear isn't the bottleneck"

The bottleneck is ears, then technique, then arrangement, then mic position, then the room — and finally gear. The order is real. A student who replaces their interface before they've recorded a hundred takes is solving a problem they haven't reached yet. Spend on what's blocking the next practice session, not on what's making the Instagram photo look better.

"More dB means better"

More dB means louder. Clarity comes from balance, EQ, and room control, not from level. A whispered jazz trio at 75 dB can be more intelligible than a metal band at 110. Loud isn't a quality; it's a quantity. A working sound engineer thinks in clarity first, level second.

"The tuner is the truth"

The tuner gives you the anchor. The ensemble gives you the truth. A string quartet tunes by ear away from the equal-tempered piano; a horn section tunes to the lead trumpet, not the tuner. Use the tuner to set the open string or the A; use the ensemble to land every note that follows.

"You need a studio to make a great recording"

You can record a great take on a phone, and you should — while you wait to afford anything better. The Coltrane Quartet rehearsed in someone's apartment; the Beatles tracked vocals two feet from each other; Glenn Gould recorded with the door open. The performance is the recording. The room and the gear add resolution, not soul.

"Earplugs ruin the music"

Foam plugs ruin the music — they over-attenuate the highs and leave the bass booming. Musician's earplugs (Etymotic ER-20, ACS Pro) attenuate flat across the spectrum — the music sounds the same, just quieter. Working musicians wear them on every gig above 95 dB. Hearing loss isn't reversible; this isn't optional after a certain mileage.

"My phone's dB meter is accurate"

It isn't. Phone microphones aren't calibrated for SPL; phone meters typically under-read by 5–15 dB. Use the meter as a relative gauge (is this louder than that?) not as a legal-grade measurement. For real SPL work, a Type 2 meter (Reed, Extech) costs ~$100 and is accurate enough for OSHA-style hearing-conservation decisions.

Expert tips — what working musicians teach when no one's filming

Record every lesson, every rehearsal

Phone, voice-memo app, hit record. Two minutes of setup, hours of value. Listen back the next day, not the same evening. The same-day listen is critical-self; the next-day listen is honest. The progress you'll make in three months from this single habit is more than from any gear upgrade.

Tune the piano before you tune your instrument

If you're playing with a piano, the piano is the reference. Tune to it, not to A = 440 in the abstract. Many piano tunings drift over a few weeks — 438, 442, somewhere in between. If you tune your strings to a tuner and the piano is at 441, you'll fight it all gig. Play the piano's A, match it.

Walk the room during sound check

The sound at the engineer's position is not the sound in the back left corner. During sound check, walk the room while the band plays — front, sides, back, balcony if there is one. Note where it sounds best and where it falls apart. Most gigging musicians never do this; the ones who do learn to play for the spots where the sound is hardest to land.

Label every cable, mark every input

White gaffer tape, sharpie, at both ends of every cable: what it's connected to. White gaffer on every channel strip: who it is. When something fails mid-set, you have 30 seconds to find it. Labels turn that 30 seconds into 5. The unsexy organizational habit that saves the gig the unprofessional way would lose it.

The phone-recording rule

Put the phone (or recorder) closer to the source than to the loudest other instrument. Aim the mic at the sound you want; let everything else be quieter by physics. For piano: phone on the music desk, lid open. For voice: phone 12 inches from the mouth. For guitar: phone at the 12th fret. Crude positioning beats good gear in the wrong place.

Build a "go-bag"

A small bag that lives by the door: tuner, two spare cables, batteries, in-ear monitors or musician's earplugs, a sharpie and gaffer tape, copies of your sheet music in a folder, a small flashlight, water bottle. The gig you never have to scramble for is the gig you can be musical at. Working musicians pack the bag once and grab it for years.

The practice path — from quiet room to working rig

What it looks like to build a working musician's setup over time. No step is optional; no step needs to be rushed.

Week 1 — set up the room

The instrument lives in a fixed spot. The room has a door that closes. A pair of closed-back headphones is by the instrument for late-night sessions. A phone with the voice-recorder app on the home screen. The friction to start a practice session has to be zero. Every gear decision from here is in service of that.

Month 1 — record yourself daily for a week

Pick the simplest week of practice you can sustain. Hit record on the phone before every session. Listen back the next day. You'll discover three things you didn't know about your playing. Don't try to "fix" everything — pick one and work on it for the rest of the month. The recording becomes part of practice, not an addition to it.

Month 3 — the home rig

Once you've recorded every day for a month on a phone, the upgrade earns its place: USB audio interface (Scarlett 2i2), one condenser mic (AT2020), DAW (GarageBand or Logic), closed-back headphones (Sony MDR-7506). Total cost ~$350. A whole new resolution opens up — you can hear pitch, tone, dynamics, phrasing in a way the phone never let you. Demos become postable; lessons become reviewable.

Month 6 — track a complete piece

Pick one piece you can play confidently. Set up the rig at the start of a day. Track it in one or two takes. Live with the recording for a week. The act of finishing a recorded piece teaches more about recording than any tutorial. The piece doesn't have to be great; the recording has to be done.

Year 1 — you know what you need

After a year of daily practice and monthly recordings, you know what the next gear move actually is. Maybe a second mic. Maybe a better interface. Maybe acoustic treatment for the room. Maybe a keyboard amp for the duo gig that started happening. Decisions become problem-led, not aspiration-led. Every purchase has a specific session it unlocked.

Year 2+ — the working rig

A small PA for the duo. In-ear monitors for the loud gigs. A go-bag that lives by the door. A monitor mix preference you can hand to a sound engineer in 20 seconds. A signal flow you can wire up half-asleep at 4 PM on a setup day. The rig has become the room. Practice happens through it; performance happens with it; recording happens because of it. The gear is no longer the question.

For practice: closed-back headphones for late nights. For recording: a stereo pair of pencil condensers (or one good large-diaphragm) above the strings. For stage: a stage piano with stereo XLR-friendly outputs and a small monitor (Yamaha HS8, KC-200). The acoustic-piano-on-stage problem is unsolved; you live with it.

bass

Bassist

Combo amp for jazz club (Ampeg Rocket, Markbass Mini CMD). Head + cab for louder rooms (Aguilar Tone Hammer + DB 410, Ampeg SVT). DI box always in the bag. For recording: DI + amp mic blend, or just a DI for control. The room and the PA do the heavy lifting; the amp is your personal monitor.

Guitarist

The amp is the instrument. Tube amp for tone (Fender Twin, Princeton, Roland Jazz Chorus for clean); pedal for color; a single SM57 in front of the speaker for both stage and recording. Less is consistently more in guitar amplification. A trio cleanly miked beats a quartet badly miked.

voice

Vocalist

Live: SM58 (or Beta 58 / 87a if the room is loud and the budget is there). Studio: large-diaphragm condenser (U87, TLM 102, AT2020). Always: a pop filter, monitors that don't bleed back into the mic, headphones during tracking. The voice is the most exposed instrument. Everything else can fake competence; vocal pitch and tone cannot.

brass/winds

Horn player

For studio: a ribbon (Royer R-121) or a large-diaphragm condenser (U87) — close, slightly off-axis to soften the top. For stage: the SM57 stays the standard. Mic position matters more than mic model — 6 inches off the bell vs 18 inches off the bell is a different instrument. Mute in the bag; the mute is half the section's color choice.

drums

Drummer

The minimum mic kit: kick (D6, Beta 52), snare (SM57), pair of pencils or large-diaphragm condensers as overheads. Add hi-hat and tom mics for bigger rooms. The overheads are the kit; the close mics are the punch. Most jazz recordings live on the overheads + a kick mic. Volume management on stage is the drummer's responsibility, not the engineer's.

The working pro audio magazine. Monthly issues since 1985; the back-issue archive (free at soundonsound.com) is a 40-year textbook of mic technique, gear reviews by working engineers, and recording-of-the-month deep dives. Mike Senior, Hugh Robjohns, Paul White — bylines you can trust on a budget. The magazine working musicians actually read.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 — Occupational Noise Exposure

The US Federal hearing-protection standard. 85 dBA / 8-hour action level (full hearing-conservation program required above this), 90 dBA / 8-hour permissible exposure limit, 5 dB exchange rate (every 5 dB louder cuts safe time by half). Not a "recording book" — but the legal and physiological floor every gigging musician should know. Free at ecfr.gov.

The mic manufacturers publish technical sheets, polar patterns, frequency-response curves, application notes. Free, primary-source, vendor-credible.
